Shares of Neurocrine Biosciences Inc. (Nasdaq: NBIX) lifted in after-hours trading after the San Diego-based company said its endometriosis treatment proved safe and effective in its fifth Phase 2 clinical trial.
The Tulip PETAL Study showed that women saw a "significant imnprovement" in symptoms after using Neurocrine's elagolix, an orally active nonpeptide Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone, or GnRH, receptor antagonist.
The Tulip PETAL study was conducted in six countries in the Eastern European region (Romania, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Russia and Bulgaria) and randomized 174 patients in a double-blind, double-dummy design into four treatment arms: elagolix 150 mg once daily, elagolix 250 mg once daily, leuprorelin monthly depot (Prostap SR) or placebo.
Doses of elagolix reduced endometriosis symptoms of non-menstrual pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea when compared to placebo.
The most common adverse events were nausea and headache, consistent with previous clinical studies of elagolix.
Neurocrine fell 5 cents, or more than 2 percent, to close at $2.14 on Wednesday but rose 17 cents, or almost 8 percent, in after-hours trading.
