Fertility quiz 'allows women to check their chances of motherhood'
Published by Admin on 2009/7/5 (502 reads)
A 22-question 'DIY’ quiz designed to help women increase their chances of becoming pregnant has been developed by scientists.

Sample questions include whether they smoke, are more than two stone overweight or drink more than the recommended guidelines.
More risky habits are colour-coded red, while habits unlikely to harm fertility are shaded blue.
Called 'Do You Know About Your Fertility?’ it has been developed by researchers at Cardiff University.

Some of the questions include factors that women cannot change, such as whether they are over the age of 34 or they suffer from gynaecological problems such as endometriosis, a common condition affecting the womb.
However, others could lead to lifestyle changes which the designers say can increase a woman’s chance of starting a family at some point in the future.

These include having unprotected sex with multiple partners, smoking regularly, suffering from high levels of stress, or being overweight.
A similar test in men also includes questions about whether they have suffered from mumps after puberty, a condition known to affect fertility.
Women scored to be at a low risk of problems are told that they should still continue to monitor their fertility and not develop any habits which would harm their chances of one day starting a family.

Those at high risk and trying to get pregnant are told to visit their doctor for further investigation.

The team behind the questionnaire hope that it will be taken up by women’s magazines where would-be mothers will be able to fill it in and increase their knowledge.
